Cubase 11 doesn't detect usb audio interface anymore

My Cubase 11 suddenly stopped detecting my yamaha steinberg usb audio interface. Here's what support told me to do that worked:

 Hi Chris,

Let's try resetting Cubase.

1. Quit all running Applications including Cubase.
2. Hover over or right-click the start tile (lower-left corner by default) and right-click and choose file explorer
3. Navigate to C: > Users >"Your Folder" > AppData* > Roaming > Steinberg
4. Move any folder with Cubase in the name to the desktop leaving no Cubase titled folders behind.
5. Launch Cubase and test again. You know if the process worked if you are asked to register again(Cubase Nuendo and Sequel only)

We can undo these changes if necessary by repeating the steps but moving the folders in step 4 back to their original locations replacing any new ones that were created.

* AppData is hidden to show follow this.
1. In the file explorer ribbon click on the View Tab
2. Put a check in the hidden items box.

How to prevent clipping in Cubase AI 5

To prevent clipping in your project, add a limiter to the output.  First open the mixer from the 'Devices' menu and select 'Edit output channel settings' on the stereo out channel.
Then, select 'Limiter' from the 'Dynamics' sub menu in the drop downs.

 Voila.

Rescuing files

I made an oopsy on my dual boot Inspiron1501 while trying to reclaim the linux partition.  I deleted the partition, and while trying to grow the main partition, somewhere along the way lost the Master Boot Record.  I couldn't boot into XP or reach my files.   Doh.  I tried the XP recovery disk, but none of the utilities could help me.

I ended up reinstalling fedora 8 on the free space I had made deleting in the first place.  Then I mounted a usb drive containing the freeware program testdisk, linux version.  Here is some documentation so I can remember the steps in case I have to go get more files.

The usb stick shows up as /dev/sdb1 a couple seconds after inserting.

To mount it,
mkdir /mnt/usb0

mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb0 -t msdos

copy and gtar -xvf the testdisk tarball

run ./testdisk_static in the testdisk directory
There you can choose files to restore.  The interface is a bit weird, you click c to choose the file or dir you want to copy, then go to the usb drive /mnt/usb0 and do Shift-C to copy the files there.

umount /mnt/usb0 before taking out the usb stick.

Back from vacation

We had an amazing time in Cape Canaveral Florida, a whirlwind one week tour. Not much time to relax, we mostly went and saw the amazing stuff there. We spent a lot of time at Kennedy space center, where we saw the shuttle Atlantis and shuttle Endeavor on the launch pads. Then the next day we saw Atlantis launch. We saw a great deal of wildlife, including alligators, armadillos, turtles and manatees as we explored the wildlife refuge of Merritt Island. We spent time relaxing on the beach, visited Gatorland in Orlando, as well as spent a day at Universal Studios. There we rode some amzing roller coasters, most notably The Hulk (0-40mph in 2 seconds), the Dueling dragons ( a twin suspended coaster with head-on courses) and the Revenge of the Mummy (indoor space mountain-esque thiller, complete with much fire). We saw the new Star Trek movie at the IMAX in Kennedy space center, saw a dinner magic-comedy show and hunted for souvenirs. Great weather (except a couple of evening thunder storms), and no bugs whatsoever. Everything went off like clockwork, and it was altogether an amazing experience. I was so disappointed to come back to Abbotsford!!

lulin in the beehive

Spotted comet Lulin again today, sighting number three. It was just below the Behive Cluster in Cancer. It seems to be getting smaller/fainter, but then the moon was also moving towards it and was starting to drown things out. Anyhow, that was quite a bit of movement over the last couple of days.
